In the spring, so many duties pop up like so many dandelions—spring cleaning, spring recitals, spring shows, First Communions, spring weddings, graduations, and if you homestead, spring planting. Faced with this towering to-do list on Saturday, my husband and I were consulting about which to tackle first in the car on the way home from Mass with our youngest children. Thinking of manure and seedlings, I started to say, “Well, it’s a beautiful day out, so probably we should…” And my children excitedly interrupted, “—have a picnic!”
